How to grow Olive Tree

Olea europaea

Olive trees are long-lived Mediterranean natives that produce oil-rich fruit and elegant silvery foliage, thriving in warm, dry climates. Home gardeners love them for their beauty, productivity, and ability to provide fresh olives or homemade oil for decades.

At a glance

โ˜€๏ธ Sun
Full sun, 6+ hours daily (8+ hours ideal)
๐Ÿ’ง Water
Water deeply but infrequently once established; drought-tolerant but produces better fruit with regular watering during growing season.
๐Ÿชฑ Soil
Well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with pH 6.0โ€“8.0; tolerates poor soil but avoid waterlogged conditions.
๐Ÿ“ Spacing
5โ€“8 meters (16โ€“26 feet) apart for mature trees
๐Ÿงบ Harvest
3โ€“4 years from planting to first fruit; full production by year 5โ€“8
๐ŸŽฏ Difficulty
Easy
๐Ÿชด In a pot?
Yes, but dwarf cultivars work best; use a minimum 60-liter (16-gallon) pot with excellent drainage.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ When to plant

Plant bare-root or container trees in mid-spring after the last frost, or in early autumn in mild climates to establish before winter.

๐ŸŒฐ How to plant

  1. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-draining soil and dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball.
  2. Place the tree so the graft union (if present) sits 5 cm (2 in) above soil level.
  3. Backfill with native soil mixed with compost, firm gently, and water deeply.
  4. Mulch around the base (avoiding the trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

๐Ÿ’ง Care

  • Prune lightly in mid-spring to maintain shape, remove dead wood, and improve air circulation.
  • Fertilize in early spring with balanced fertilizer; established trees need minimal feeding.
  • Water regularly during fruit development in summer, then reduce watering in autumn.
  • Provide winter protection in cold climates with frost cloth or grow in containers moved indoors.
  • Thin fruit in early summer if trees are heavily laden to improve olive size and quality.

๐Ÿงบ Harvest

Pick olives in late autumn to mid-winter when they shift from green to black, or harvest green earlier for a firmer texture. Use a fruit picker or gently shake branches onto tarps; fresh olives require curing before eating.

๐Ÿ› Common problems

Olive fruit fly: Monitor with pheromone traps from late summer; spray neem oil or insecticidal soap if infestations appear, and remove fallen fruit promptly.

Peacock spot (fungal disease): Improve air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and spray copper fungicide in humid conditions during growing season.

Scale insects: Spray horticultural oil in late winter before bud break, or use neem oil during growing season if populations increase.

๐Ÿค Companion plants

๐Ÿ’š Good neighbours: Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme, Citrus trees

โš ๏ธ Keep apart from: Walnut trees, Fennel

๐ŸŒŸ Did you know? Olive trees can live for over 1,000 yearsโ€”some ancient groves in Greece and Palestine contain trees that are still producing fruit after 2,000+ years of growth.
