ποΈ When to plant
Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last frost when soil has warmed to at least 16Β°C (60Β°F). For continuous harvests, sow in successive batches every 2β3 weeks until mid-summer.
π° How to plant
- Soak seeds for 2 hours before planting to speed germination.
- Push seeds 2β3 cm (1 in) deep directly into warm soil; avoid transplanting as beans prefer direct sowing.
- Space according to variety (bush or pole) and keep soil moist until seedlings emerge in 7β10 days.
- Provide a trellis or stakes for pole varieties to climb.
π§ Care
- Water consistently at the base to avoid wetting foliage, which can encourage disease.
- Mulch around plants to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
- Pinch off flower buds if excessive flowering occurs without pod set.
- Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which promote leaves over beans; beans fix their own nitrogen.
π§Ί Harvest
Pick pods when they are young, tender, and still snappy (before seeds bulge), usually 50β70 days after sowing. Harvest every 2β3 days to encourage continued production and prevent pods from becoming tough and stringy.
π Common problems
Aphids: Spray with a strong water jet or use insecticidal soap; encourage natural predators like ladybugs.
Bean beetles: Handpick adults and yellow egg clusters, or use neem oil as a last resort.
Powdery mildew: Improve air circulation by pruning lower leaves, and spray with sulfur or baking soda solution if needed.
Root rot: Ensure well-draining soil and avoid overwatering; remove affected plants immediately.
π€ Companion plants
π Good neighbours: Corn (structure for pole beans), Squash (nitrogen-fixing partnership), Cucumbers, Basil
β οΈ Keep apart from: Fennel, Alliums (onions, garlic)
